What Odessa homeowners deal with

  • Older buildings and nearby fields mean mice and termites are worth watching for.
  • Appoquinimink Creek, ditches and farm ponds give mosquitoes places to breed in summer; empty backyard containers weekly.
  • Blacklegged ticks live in woody edges statewide, and DNREC says ticks can be active year-round.

What shapes pest pressure in Odessa

The Delaware Public Archives says Odessa began as Cantwell’s Landing on the Appoquinimink Creek, one end of a portage road on a route set up in the seventeenth century to connect Delaware Bay and Chesapeake Bay. The landing and the village of Cantwell’s Bridge were named for Edmund Cantwell, who settled nearby in the 1670s; a rail line was later laid from the village to Middletown, and town officials renamed it Odessa after a port on the Black Sea. Odessa was first incorporated in 1873. Census Bureau place centers put Middletown about 3 miles away and Townsend about 4 miles away in a straight line, and almost all of the town falls in ZIP Code Tabulation Area 19730.

After the fall harvest, field mice move from nearby fields toward buildings, and stink bugs gather on sunny walls. DNREC says blacklegged ticks live in woody edges statewide, that longhorned ticks turn up in New Castle and Kent counties in spring and summer, and that ticks can be active year-round. Creeks, ditches and stormwater ponds are the kind of wet ground DNREC’s Mosquito Control Section monitors in the warmer months.
